In 2009, The Downtown Development Authority of Swainsboro (DDA) took ownership of a large vacant building in downtown Swainsboro with the intentions of opening the area’s largest arts, antiques, and crafts market. That Fall, the DDA began renovations to the property, located at 215 West Main Street. As the Summer of 2010 neared, the group found itself nearing the completion of the building, which received a newly repaired roof and new electrical, plumbing, and heating and cooling systems. In addition, an office, storage closets, and restrooms were added to the property.
The Main Street Market opened in the spring of 2011, and now features more than 60 dealer booths offering a selection of antiques, home decor, fine art, local crafts, unique gifts, and more. A local artisans booth boasts a variety of locally made arts and crafts, books written by local authors, and music recorded by local musicians.
The Main Street Market was awarded a 2011 Georgia Downtown Award for Economic Development: Best Problem Solving.
