In 2009, The Downtown Development Authority of Swainsboro (DDA) took ownership of a large vacant building in downtown Swainsboro with the intentions of opening the area’s largest arts, antiques, and crafts market. That Fall, the DDA began renovations to the property, located at 215 West Main Street. As the Summer of 2010 neared, the group found itself nearing the completion of the building, which received a newly repaired roof and new electrical, plumbing, and heating and cooling systems. In addition, an office, storage closets, and restrooms were added to the property.
The Main Street Market opened in the spring of 2011, providing a retail outlet featuring local and fine art, crafts, antiques, and gifts. Retail spaces are available for rent to various vendors, while the market manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the market. A community space within the market also houses local events including organizational meetings, live music, and more.
The Main Street Market was awarded a 2011 Georgia Downtown Award for Economic Development: Best Problem Solving.
